Work commences on refurbishing the Parks public toilets

Temporary toilets have been provided while the works take place and the defibrillator will remain in its current location on the east elevation.

The public toilet facilities in the Parks are in urgent need of refurbishment to both update them and make them more accessible for people with mobility problems. It is not known exactly when the toilet block was originally constructed but it was some time between 1932 and 1947. Since then, the block has undergone several refurbishments, in 1963 and, more recently, in 1998.

Although the toilet block is not listed for Planning purposes, it is proposed that the external appearance remain the same, with some improvement in the form of rendering and making good any damage. The footprint of the toilet block will also remain how it currently is, but there will be some significant amendments to the internal layout.

Overall, the internal works amount to two self-contained women’s toilets, one self-contained baby changing/ gender neutral toilet, one compliant accessible toilet, and one men’s toilet with a single cubicle and a bank of urinals. Internal finishes will comply with British Standards for sanitary appliances, and aim to be resilient and durable.

The connecting pathways will be altered to accommodate new openings on the south elevation and the relocated accessible toilet. The proposed finish will have a hoggin finish to match the existing one.

We thank our visitors for their patience while we carry out these improvements.
