Parrotia persica

The Parrotia persica, a large shrub or small tree which has wide spreading branches is our plant of the week. Commonly known as the Persian Ironwood tree it produces leaves with rich autumnal colours and has an attractive grey mottled flaking bark which is best appreciated in the winter months. A relation of the witch hazel (Hamamelis) it yields small but similar flowers in February or early March. Located in the North Walk it prefers an open and sunny but sheltered position.
