Koelreutria paniculata, commonly known as the Pride of India, Golden Rain Tree, or China Tree, grows on the West Walk within the Parks. It is a very elegant medium-sized tree with an upright crown, growing up to nine metres tall. It produces large clusters of golden flowers in July which are up to 40 centimetres long. These are often followed by handsome and interestingly-shaped seed pods, bearing seeds that are edible when roasted. Its handsome pinnate leaves (that is, leaves made up of many smaller leaflets) turn yellow and orange in the autumn. Native to China, the plant prefers a sheltered, free-draining, sunny position.
