You can find Stipa gigantea, commonly known as Golden Oats, Giant Oat Grass, Giant Feather Grass or Giant Needle Grass, growing around Keble Gate and along the West Walk in the University Parks. It is a tall, elegant perennial grass which provides interesting contrast with the plants around it. Growing up to 1.5 metres tall, it tolerates drought and prefers free-draining soils with good light. Its foliage is almost evergreen locally, while its flowers resemble golden oats and remain on the plant well into the winter. Introduced from Spain, it grows in the wild throughout the Southern Mediterranean.
