New footbridges to grace University Parks

Handrails

New bridge rails

New side railings for three footbridges across the Cherwell in the University Parks and Mesopotamia – the long island between two branches of the river – have been installed.

The new bridge rails are made of Accoya wood. A Forest Stewardship Council-certified sustainable softwood grown in plantations. It’s then subjected to a special chemical treatment that fills every cell with preservatives, making it tougher than most tropical hardwoods. In fact, it’s so resistant to fungal and insect attack that it’s guaranteed for 50 years – 25 even if it’s below water. This resilience makes it more sustainable – once installed it can stay put for a long time to come.
