Arizona cypress

Native to the south western part of the USA, Cupressus arizonica, commonly known as Arizona cypress, has found its way into the University Parks in the North Walk, near the North Lodge. A beautiful conifer with waxy pale grey or bluish-green foliage, it is an excellent winter plant for both form and colour.

The wild scrub fires in its native USA often destroy the trees but the fire-damaged the cones, which do not open until they are burned, cast seeds that will grow into a new generation of trees to recolonise the fire ravaged areas.
