Chimonanthus praecox

Our first bloom of the year can only be described as ‘a winter gem to cheer a January day’ – the words of Walter Sawyer, University Parks Superintendent. Chimonanthus praecox, also known as winter sweet or ice flower, is a very early flowering and highly fragrant shrub, found by the South Lodge.  Apparently you can smell its ‘spicy perfume’ before you see it!
