Plant of the Week

The Bird Cherry, Prunus padus ‘Colarata’, is a large shrub whose almond-scented purple flowers are followed by purple leaves. The flowers form racemes – clusters in which separate flowers are attached by short stalks at equal distances along a central stem. The Bird Cherry likes any open situation in free-draining soil, and can be found in the Pavilion Border in the University Parks. This form was first discovered in Sweden in 1953.
