Plant of the Week

Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ is a beautiful early-flowering Magnolia that forms a large shrub or small tree.  It is tolerant of most soils, but best in a sheltered garden as early frosts can damage its flowers. This is a hybrid which originated at Nymans in Sussex – a great garden created by the late Colonel Messel, now in the care of the National Trust. In the University Parks you can see it growing on the North Walk, near the Lady Margaret Gate.
